Calling All First Graders: First Cards Competition

  

September is National Library    Card Sign-Up Month for Public Libraries

 

There is no better time of the year than September to sign up for a library card! This month, libraries across the country are celebrating the value of getting a library card.

 

Mrs. Croft invites all first graders to sign up for a library card during September and receive a free Applebees Dessert Shooter coupon.

 

A friendly competition will be held to determine the teacher with the most students  with a library card by the end of September. The library will keep track of  first graders who sign up, their teacher and class. If you already have a library card, simply come by the library to have your name added to the list. The winning class will receive a Scholastic reading prize for their classroom.

 

Students, remember to bring a parent or legal guardian along with you to the library to sign for permission. Parents photo ID/proof of address will be needed also.

Calling All Outdoor Lovers

If you are wondering what is new in the library for fans of hunting and fishing then you may want to check out our new series, Great Outdoors Sports Zone featuring six titles. You can enter the zone to learn about history, gear, rules, and best techniques whether you are big game hunting or saltwater fishing. This series features:

Balloons Over Broadway

     Do you ever wonder how the wonderful Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade got started? What about those amazing and enormous balloons that fly overhead? The story of the parade and it's grand balloons has been creatively shared in Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. It's a Caldecott Honor Winner and  I love the whimsical illustrations  that help to tell the story. This journey of a little boy who was curious to figure out how to make things move may inspire you too! Come check it out at the public library.

Calling All Dads

12 Things Dads Can Do With Their Kids at the Library

1. Look for DVDs, videogames, books, and manga with your child
2. Attend a family-friendly movie or other children’s programs
3. Join the summer or winter reading clubs – lots of great shows that are free and rewards for summer reading
4. Come to a storytime
5. Work on homework together using their many databases
6. Look at the displays and talk about what you discover together. (Check out the library's  old telephone display!)
7. Participate in the Lego Club offered throughout the year
8. Play computer games
9. Make up a knowledge search game where kids race to find the answer to 10 questions (Sort of a scavenger hunt for information)
10. Check out the library for exclusive deals they have Georgia State Parks and Zoo Atlanta
11. Oh, almost forgot! Read with them! Studies have shown that children who were read to for 20 minutes each day, starting from birth, start school able to read and ready to learn
